Resonance is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between language, sensory perception, and cultural context. Developed in collaboration with the TextielLab at the TextielMuseum in the Netherlands, the project investigates how language serves as a conduit for sensory experience and how behavior is shaped by the environments we inhabit.

Currently based in the United Kingdom, yu mei huang has navigated a range of linguistic and cultural landscapes throughout her life. These experiences have revealed subtle — and sometimes profound — differences in interpretation and expression across languages, sparking a deeper inquiry into how these nuances influence individual behavior, cognition, and perception of self.

At the heart of Resonance lies a series of knitting experiments created in partnership with TextielLab technicians Yani Chuang and Damien Semerdijian. This collaboration not only gave rise to new textile structures and techniques but also highlighted the role of communication : verbal, visual, and tactile , as an essential element of creative production. The process of working closely with technicians and navigating diverse communicative contexts became, in itself, a critical layer of the work.

The resulting textiles reflect a convergence of thought, emotion, and materiality. Through shape, form, and silhouette, the project gives voice to the internal rhythms of cross-cultural experience, translating emotional resonance into woven form. In doing so, it becomes both an introspective practice and a broader meditation on how identity is continuously reshaped by language, collaboration, and the environments we move through.
